Estate 'Hell's Window' Pinot Gris Gewurz Riesling 2021

Summit ClubPrice: $26.25

Our Hell's window is a Natural wine, also known as an orange or amber wine. It is made with Pinot Gris, Gew├╝rztraminer and Riesling using the same techniques as a red wine. The grapes are all picked on the same day, then crushed together before being put into open fermenters. After it has finished fermented, using wild yeast, it is pressed off skins and finished in old French oak for five months. It has no filtration, no fining and only minimal sulphites added (at bottling). This results in a vegan wine that can undergo a slight secondary fermentation in bottle which leads to a slightly cloudy wine with a slight fiz. It is perfect on a hot afternoon with an ice cube if desired. As David Ritchie says "Think of this wine as a drink rather than a wine. It is more like an Aperol spritz."

Orange or Amber wines (in this case more like a Rose) are wines made from white grape varieties that have been fermented by wild yeast on their skins for a period of time and then pressed off skins to complete fermentation in large oak vessels. The wine is then bottled without any further intervention from the winemaker; so no additions, fining or filtration, this is a completely natural wine. As such, wines of this type will tend to have a slight haze and is likely to throw a crust of harmless crystals.
