Estate 'Piquette' Gewürztraminer 2024

What is Piquette?

It has a long history during vintage in Spain, France and Italy as the drink pickers and workers enjoy on their lunch break while sitting in the vines.

It is made from the ‘marc’ which is the skins and seeds left after the juice is pressed from the grapes during winemaking. Normally the marc is thrown out or made into compost but this year we put the Gewurztraminer marc into an open fermenter and added our rain water. After a week of fermenting, we finally discarded the marc and put it in tank and let it ferment.

It is a lower alcohol drink (we can't describe it as a wine due to labelling laws) at 5% alcohol with a lovely spritz and beautiful musk characters. Think along the lines of a sour beer.

In the last 10 years Delatite has made wine as naturally as possible. We use 100% wild yeast in all Estate wines and have no enzymes or fining agents and minimal Sulphur. Our Red wines are also unfiltered. This allows the wines to fully show the vineyard’s characteristics. The grapes are grown following biodynamic principles which doesn’t allow the use of artificial inputs; encouraging greater biodiversity in the vineyard.
