Reserve ‘Robert’s Block RJ’ Shiraz 2010

94 points in James Halliday’s 2014 Australian Wine Companion

Our Reserve Shiraz is named for Robert Ritchie who (along with his wife Vivienne) planted the first vines here at Delatite in 1968. Robert’s block is only 0.4ha and was part of the original vineyard, with the vines dating back to 1968. RJ is only made in our best years, ensuring the vines and winemaking are carefully managed to ensure ultra-premium quality.
We picked the Shiraz in early April and crushed to open fermenters. The must was cold-soaked for eight days, then allowed to warm up and start fermenting with its own wild yeasts. The ferment was hand-plunged and pumped over three times a day. After fermentation, the wine was pressed out and matured in a mix of new French and American oak barrels for 24 months. No fining agents were used and this wine was bottled without filtration.
The RJ is deeply coloured with aromas of blackberry and peppery spices. The palate is intense with tart cassis, cracked pepper and spicy oak flavours. The tannins are mouth-filling and the wine has a long finish of berry and oak characters.
